From the Houston Unido site:
Protest at the *Federal Detention Center (1200 Texas at San Jacinto) this Tuesday, Oct 18 @ noon.
HOUSTON UNITED calls for an end to racial profiling:
End detention for non violent immigration offenses: … Immigration violations are non-violent and victimless, yet comprise 35.5% of “offenses” that result in prison sentences.
Stop the destruction of families: … 79% of people deported under the so called “Secure Communities” program had NO criminal records or were picked up for minor offenses like traffic violations, leaving behind families that depended upon them.
End Secure Communities and 287g: … These programs require checks of the fingerprints of every person booked by local law enforcement against Dept. of Homeland Security databases for immigration violations. This has resulted in over a million deportations during Obama’s administration.
Stop profiting from the detention of immigrants: … In 2010, the 2 biggest private prison corporations, CCA and the GEO Group made $1.69 billion and $1.17 billon.Texas has more private prison immigration beds than any other state. Between the 5 corporations with ICE(Immigration and Customs Enforcement) contracts, lobbying expenditure from 1999-2009 was over 20 billion dollars. They lobby for anti immigrant laws and were involved in the drafting and passing of Arizona’s notorious SB 1070.
*the Federal Detention Center houses roughly 1,000 pretrial and holdover inmates (inmates held while waiting to be shipped to other prisons)
