A century ago, a young African-American soldier singlehandedly fought off a group of German soldiers in the French trenches of the First World War. But his heroism was largely forgotten by an American society ruled by segregation.

Hysteria over Jade Helm exercise in Texas was fueled by Russians, former CIA director says
Gov. Greg Abbott’s decision in 2015 to ask the Texas State Guard to monitor a federal military exercise prompted significant criticism. A former CIA director said Wednesday that the move emboldened Russians to next target elections.

Operation Jade Helm 15, a military training exercise, began in the summer of 2015 in 12 Texas counties: Bastrop, Burleson, Brazos, Edwards, Howard, Hudspeth, Kimble, Martin, Marion, Real, Schleicher and Tom Green. It was also set to take place at Camp Bullis in San Antonio and Camp Swift in Bastrop County. Graphic by Todd Wiseman
A former director of the CIA and NSA said Wednesday that hysteria in Texas over a 2015 U.S. military training exercise called Jade Helm was fueled by Russians wanting to dominate “the information space,” and that Texas Gov. Greg Abbott‘s decision to send the Texas State Guard to monitor the operation gave them proof of the power of such misinformation campaigns.
“The threat of impeachment can push presidents out the door. But there’s a catch.” – Washington Post
This article is a really thoughtful primer on how impeachments can be right, wrong or unknown impactors in democratic systems.
I never read the Federalist papers in school, but especially over the last 2 years have been obliged to delve into them occasionally for purposes of the show. I am frequently struck by how much thought and wisdom went into the writing of these papers, both the pros and cons what the new Constitution should include and how it should be phrased, that never actually made its way into the Constitution. I suppose that the footnotes required would have been ponderous, yet clarifying.
The article cites Hamilton thus:
… because presidents are judged by the legislative body, the instrument inevitably has a political component. In the United States, for instance, Alexander Hamilton warned in Federalist #65 of this risk — “the greatest danger, that the decision will be regulated more by the comparative strength of parties than by the real demonstrations of innocence or guilt.”
The English in the original text of Federalist #65 is written in an archaic style and is also technical in nature, so it might me useful to go to a site that summarizes it such as here, in the literal Cliff’s Notes version. On this page, a useful mention is made of the 17th Amendment:
As this section is largely expository, detailing the nature and necessity of the powers to be exercised by the United States Senate, there is no need to comment except perhaps to note this: Publius made much of the “distinctive” character of the Senate arising from the fact that its members would be chosen by the state legislatures, and not directly by the people, as was the case with members of the House of Representatives. In 1913, with the adoption of the Seventeenth Amendment to the Constitution, it was stipulated that United States Senators in each state were to be “elected by the people thereof.”
The threat of impeachment can push presidents out the door. But there’s a catch.
[WASHINGTON POST] DATED , 2018
In late March, Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski resigned from office, a day before he would have been impeached. Kuczynski was the 10th Latin American president since the 1990s to leave office under the threat of impeachment.
Kuczynski’s downfall highlights some of the pitfalls of impeachment, a term that shows up a lot in the U.S. media these days. Here are some key takeaways:

Lane Lewis, Chair of the Harris County Democratic Party
POSSIBLE TOPICS: Unions and Labor Day, and the future of the labor movement in America
- “Without the labor advances won by #Unions, #Capitalism itself might not exist today.” ~ Me
- Let’s talk first about Labor Day. How was it created, and why is it in September instead of May Day, like the rest of the world’s equivalent labor celebrations?
- The Labor Union movement was strong after WW2. What happened to weaken it?
- Conservatives have succeeded in villainizing unions in the minds of many workers. How have they accomplished that?
- How can it be reversed?
- “We continually try to read Conservatives through Liberal-colored glasses. When we try to see things as Conservatives see them through their own eyes, understanding can arise. From that understanding can come effective Progressive responses.” ~ Michael R. Honig, 4/28/2015 (inspired by Jackson Galaxy)
- Is that a trick that progressives and labor groups need to try to learn, and can they?
- Is the political labor pendulum beginning to swing the other way now?
- Judging from the current political and legal climate, it almost seems like labor organizing needs to start over again.
- What will labor organizing look like as the 21st century progresses?
- Is Unionization Important to Closing Racial Wage Gap? Study Says, SEPT. 4, 2015
- The NY Times had an interesting article on workers’ committees (Workers Organize, but Don’t Unionize, to Get Protection Under Labor Law).
- I loved this quote: “We feel that the group’s tactics are over the top,” said Carol Wight, chief executive of the New Mexico Restaurant Association. “I think there are nicer, more effective ways of getting what you want — achieving justice for workers.”
- The article makes 2 important points:
- Unions, at least in New Mexico, have not shown much interest in organizing low-wage workers;
- “Workers Committees” are easier to organize than unions.
- What does this development mean for workers in the future?
- What does it mean for unions going forward?
- Unions need money to do their work, whether it’s paying full-time officials, forming strike funds or funding political action.
- Can unions survive in their current form, and if so, how?
- If unions have to change, what might those changes look like?
- Specifically, does the AFL-CIO and it’s brother and sister unions have new strategies going forward that we can discuss here tonight?

- Wetlands are advantageous to the environment as they help maintain our water quality, recharge aquifers, reduce flood damage from storms, sustain many habitats for a variety plants and animals such as migratory birds, and are vital to the economy as they are popular tourist attractions as well as part of the fishing industry.
- Unfortunately, wetland acreage has been decreasing significantly because of human development.
- Texas has lost over half of its wetlands since European settlement of the area equivalent to seven million acres.
- Therefore, the group would like to raise awareness to protect this habitat.
- They participated in Marsh Mania last month through the Galveston Bay Foundation (GBF) and helped plant over 6000 stalks of smooth cordgrass in Dickinson, Texas. The GBF has preserved, protected, and restored over 16,500 acres of wetland habitat since its founding in 1987.
- More stats:
- The Galveston Bay watershed has lost more than 30,000 acres of freshwater and saltwater wetlands between 1953 and 1989.
- An additional 365 acres of saltwater wetlands and 13,538 acres of freshwater wetlands have been lost to development in a 15 year period (1996-2010) which totals 13% of all wetlands.
- Marsh Mania began in 1999 and has involved more than 7,700 community volunteers who have restored over 207 acres of vital salt marsh habitat at 89 sites around Galveston Bay.
- Smooth cordgrasses are planted to prevent the weathering and erosion of sediment along the shores of wetlands and create needed habitats for organisms such as migratory birds.

FDR “Let Me Warn You” (1936) (1m15s)
“Let me warn you and let me warn the nation against the smooth evasion which says, ‘Of course we believe all these things; we believe in social security; we believe in work for the unemployed; we believe in saving homes. Cross our hearts and hope to die, we believe in all these things; but we do not like the way the present Administration is doing them. Just turn them over to us. We will do all of them—we will do more of them, we will do them better; and, most important of all, the doing of them will not cost anybody anything.”
“But, my friends, these evaders are banking too heavily on the shortness of our memories. No one will forget that they had their golden opportunity—twelve long years of it.
“Remember, too, that the first essential of doing a job well is to want to see the job done. Make no mistake about this: The Republican leadership today is not against the way we have done the job. The Republican leadership is against the job’s being done.” ~ Franklin D. Rooselvelt, Address at the Democratic State Convention, Syracuse, N.Y. (September 29, 1936) See Video excerpt here. Beware them both, and all of their degree, but most of all beware this boy, for on his brow I see that written which is Doom, unless the writing be erased.
