“This too shall pass” ~ (Persian: این نیز بگذرد, translit. īn nīz bogzarad, Hebrew: גַּם זֶה יַעֲבֹר, translit. gam zeh yaʻavor, Turkish: bu da geçer ya hu) is an adage reflecting on the temporary nature, or ephemerality, of the human condition. The general sentiment is often expressed in wisdom literature throughout history and across cultures, although the specific phrase seems to have originated in the writings of the medieval Persian Sufi poets. It is known in the Western world primarily due to a 19th century retelling of Persian fable by the English poet Edward FitzGerald. It was also notably employed in a speech by Abraham Lincoln before he became the sixteenth President of the United States. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Hysteria over Jade Helm exercise in Texas was fueled by Russians, former CIA director says
Gov. Greg Abbott’s decision in 2015 to ask the Texas State Guard to monitor a federal military exercise prompted significant criticism. A former CIA director said Wednesday that the move emboldened Russians to next target elections.

Operation Jade Helm 15, a military training exercise, began in the summer of 2015 in 12 Texas counties: Bastrop, Burleson, Brazos, Edwards, Howard, Hudspeth, Kimble, Martin, Marion, Real, Schleicher and Tom Green. It was also set to take place at Camp Bullis in San Antonio and Camp Swift in Bastrop County. Graphic by Todd Wiseman
A former director of the CIA and NSA said Wednesday that hysteria in Texas over a 2015 U.S. military training exercise called Jade Helm was fueled by Russians wanting to dominate “the information space,” and that Texas Gov. Greg Abbott‘s decision to send the Texas State Guard to monitor the operation gave them proof of the power of such misinformation campaigns.

Gov. Rick Perry [TX] is an idiot for proposing militarizing the US border with Mexico
Below is an open email I’ve written to Rep. Joaquin Castro [TX-20] in response to his open email about Gov. Perry proposing to send National Guard troops to the Texas border with Mexico. His is letter is below my response.

Dear Joaquin,
I agree that we should not be putting National Guard troops on the border with Mexico, but partly for different reasons.
Perhaps first and foremost, National Guard troops are not military personnel who sometimes live as civilians. They are civilians who sometimes live as military personnel. As such, calling them up for what is really police work is a frivolous, politically-inspired upheaval of their lives. It also constitutes an abuse of these warriors who have volunteered to disrupt their lives and the lives of their families, and risk their lives for their country, when the safety and security of the citizens of the United States are at stake. This humanitarian refugee emergency on our border does not rise to that standard.

“The Daily Show”, Back in Black: Hey Texas, Don’t Frak With New York
Texas Governor Rick “The Hair” Perry is pimping plumping for jobs in other states to bring to Texas. The states in question have an uncommon propensity to be ‘Blue’.

Show Announcement 8/3/2012: Election Journalist Brad Friedman (“The Bradblog”)
Can we trust our U.S. election system?
On Friday, August 3rd from 9:05-9:55am (CDT), I will be interviewing famed honest-election journalist and advocate Brad Friedman. This will be a “Thinkwing Radio” edition, and will combine “Open Journal-Community Conversation” with “Open Journal-Community Spotlight”. (“Community Conversation” will be live from 9:05-9:30am. Brad’s interview will run from 9:30-9:55am, and will be pre-recorded.) You will be able to listen in real time in Houston on 90.1 FM, or online here.
Voter rights and election integrity have been under assault in ways that we have not seen since the 1965 Voting Rights Act became law. Why that’s the case, what can be done about it, and how you can take steps to protect your vote will be among the topics of discussion during this hour.
The show will also be added to the Thinkwing Radio blog on the archive page shortly after it becomes available.

Rick Perry? A neat photo summation.
Rick Perry Got Applause For Executing Hundreds of People. That’s troubling.
As is probably true of any thinking person, I’ve thought a lot about the death penalty. Is it fair? Is it state-sanctioned murder? Is there any crime or criminal that justifies it or deserves it?
The answer I’ve arrived at over the years is, Yes and no. And I don’t mean that in a wishy-washy, ‘I’m-not-sure’ sort of way. Continue reading
ACLU Of Texas Demands That Governor Perry Disclose Use Of Public Resources For Prayer Event
I received this announcement in my email today. This should be of interest to anyone who believes in the principle and importance of separation of Church and State; a line of separation which Texas Governor Rick Perry and other Republicans are trying, with increasing stridency and boldness, to blur.
Mike
PS: [7/20/2011, 6:53PM] Just minutes ago, I received a robocall from Rick Perry inviting me (an unwelcome Jew, I might add) to this event. Absolutely, this is a United States Governor advocating and presiding over a religious event under color of his authority as an elected official sworn to uphold the Constitutions of both the United States of America and the State of Texas.
My question: Has this now reached the level of an impeachable offense?
UPDATE (10:22PM, 7/20/2011): The robocall came from a phone number in Tupelo, MS. My CID stamps it by “Unknown Caller” at 6:43PM (7-20-2011) from 662-821-2011. As of this writing, you can call that number to hear the message.

ACLU Of Texas Demands That Governor Perry Disclose Use Of Public Resources For Prayer Event
Perry’s “The Response” Blurs The Lines Between Separation Of Church And State
HOUSTON — The American Civil Liberties Union of Texas today requested that Gov. Rick Perry and other officials disclose the amount of tax-payer dollars and other state or local government resources used to promote the prayer event, The Response: A Call to Prayer for a Nation in Crisis, set for Aug. 6 at Reliant Stadium.
“We are concerned that Gov. Perry is using public office to endorse a sectarian religious event and to advance specific Christian beliefs,” said Lisa Graybill, Legal Director of the ACLU of Texas. “We are seeking information on the degree to which state resources have been or will be used for the planning and promotion of this event and for state officials’ participation in it.”
The ACLU of Texas filed open records requests with the governor’s office as well as the Harris County sheriff’s, auditor’s and fire marshal’s offices and the City of Houston.
“The ACLU of Texas values the diversity of belief systems in public life, and each of our beliefs calls us to address problems in different ways. But none of us, especially an elected official, is in the position to say whether believers or non-believers should lead the way in solving our common problems,” said Terri Burke, Executive Director of the ACLU of Texas. “We believe that diversity is protected, society is best served, and the U.S. Constitution is respected when government actions remain separate from religious action, when religion is neither forced upon us, nor prohibited, by government. The Response certainly does not seem to follow that principle.”
One of the cornerstones of the ACLU’s work is to ensure that the First Amendment is upheld and to safeguard against government promotion of, or interference with, religious practice.
Under the state’s open records law, government officials have 10 business days to respond to open records requests. The ACLU of Texas expects a response on or before August 3.

STRAY BULLET FROM MEXICAN SHOOTOUT CROSSES BORDER INTO EL PASO. Texas’s Perry Demands That Obama erect bullet-proof shield along border
by Mike Honig, 10/19/2010
Okay, Rick Perry didn’t exactly ask for a bullet-proof shield along Mexico’s border with El Paso, but he might as well have. Here’s his quote as reported by CNN :
“By the grace of God, the stray bullets from these incidents have yet to injure or kill a Texan,” he said. “It is unconscionable that the Obama administration is gambling with American lives, betting that escalating violence from these cartels won’t eventually shed the blood of innocent people on U.S. soil.” …We must ensure El Paso and other border communities remain a safe place for people to live, work and raise a family,” Perry said. “It’s time for Washington to stop the rhetoric and immediately deploy a [significant] force of personnel and resources to the border to protect our homeland.”
The report states that the stray bullet crossed the border and hit a UT school on the U..S. side of the border (the second occurrence of this sort in two months) during a gun battle between drug traffickers and Mexican authorities which took place about 30 yards from the U.S. border on the Mexican side in the city of Juarez.
Certainly Perry is justified in his anger, How inconsiderate of the Mexican gangsters and police! Not to make sure that they were shooting east/west instead of north/south! Can’t they discuss this stuff before they start shooting??
Maybe he would prefer that the Mexican government NOT try to destroy the drug cartels on the Mexican side of the border because, you know, that would be much more in the interests of Texas and the United States.(Oh, did we discuss the fact that the Mexican gangsters probably got most of their guns through Texas because gun laws are so lax? I didn’t think so.)
I suppose that Perry might prefer if Mexico and the drug gangsters agree to set up a “no-shooting buffer zone” for 1-2 miles on the Mexican side of the border to avoid future incidents of this type. You know, out of consideration
That way, even if Mexican drug lords use the buffer zone to set up drug strongholds that can’t be touched by the Mexican authorities or the U.S. and become nexuses for drug export to Texas, the U.S and the world, at least we won’t have the odd stray bullet crossing the border.
Or of course, Rick “Deep Thinker” Perry could demand that the U.S. government, by order of Obama, erect a giant 1500-mile long bullet-proof Plexiglas wall along the Mexican border. You know, to stop stray bullets. (BTW, how tall would it have to be to stop bullets flying over the wall?)
Would it be allowed to have doors? Because a stray bullet could always sneak in while people or vehicles are going in or out.
Or maybe Perry thinks that Obama should order the U.S. military to set up a 1 mile “bullet trajectory” buffer zone INSIDE Mexico. Because, you know, sending the army to the border and occupying foreign territory along the second longest demilitarized border in the world (the longest is our northern border with Canada!) sounds like such a good strategic idea.
I’m curious … Do you think that a stray bullet has ever crossed into Mexico from the U.S. side? From the Texas side? Ever?
I’m kind of betting.
But I guess that the Governors of the Mexican border states of Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas aren’t quite as stupid as ours.
