From the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center: Recent Rains Benefit Spring Wildflowers

[March 15, 2012: Based on recent rains, weather,and my observations of local Houston roadside flora, I suspect that the next couple of weeks will be prime wildflower viewing in the metro-Houston area of southeast Texas. ENJOY! :-) ]

If you live in Texas, the next several weeks (usually in March, possibly April) are the prettiest time to get out of the city and see the open road. Due to the drought, 2011 was a very disappointing year for wildflower lovers, but 2012 is ripe with possibilities.

We’ve had some decent rains recently, and mild weather. Wildflower forecasters are guardedly optimistic. (See links below)

Labor Leaders, in Support of ILWU, Ask Obama to Keep Military Out Of Labor Dispute

Below are two letters which I found on westcoastportshutdown.org. They are dated January 19, 2012, and I have not at this time been able to independently verify them.

If they are legitimate, and if the scenario they discuss is real, than this has the potential to be an extremely serious situation, escalating tensions between labor and the federal government to a level not seen in decades.

The letters and links are reproduced below as I found them.

(On Jan. 22, I found confirming articles with some additional information: Obama Deploys Military in Labor Dispute, Statement of S.F. Labor Council dated January 10; Military Resistance 10A12 dated Jan. 13; Military Intervention vs. Maritime Union Power dated Jan. 21.)

[Some parts updated 3/25/11]

If you live in Texas, the next several weeks (latter part of March, probably April) are the prettiest time to get out of the city and see the open road. The flowers are blossoming a tad later than usual this year because this winter was the coldest we’ve had in perhaps a decade.
