UPDATE: On February 19, 2013, The Washington Post published a story entitled “Stanley McChrystal says the U.S. should reinstitute the draft”. (Read it here.) His reasonings are not so different from mine.

The recent firing of General Stanley McChrystal once again reminds us that in the United States, civilian authority controls the military. That’s the way it must be if a democracy is to remain a democracy.
But here’s a question: Have our troops been abused by the deficient policies and strategies of some in civilian leadership? Are there things which our civilian leaders need to do better?

OCCUPYHOUSTON: #HPD assault, cock/point shotgun at unarmed citizens for noise violation [VIDEO]

This video was taken at the Houston Free Thinkers Free Show. The police showed up at 10:15pm with the stated purpose of addressing a noise complaint. Derrick Broze spoke to the police about the noise and agreed to shut down one of the three stages. While Derrick spoke to the officer another officer began poking around The Compound (which is not a public venue). Derrick asked these police if they had a warrant. They asked for his ID. He told them he was not in public and that he was not driving a car and was not therefore required to have one but was happy to identify himself as Derrick Broze and provided his birth date as well.
The officer then grabbed Derrick and took him out into the street and put him against the car and searched him. All without charging him or telling him anything. As more friends came around and asked what was going on. Some were unwilling to remain silent and exercised their first amendment rights and spoke their mind. One of these individuals was forcibly grabbed from behind and threatened, “your freedom ends tonight” (can be heard in the video). This individual breaks loose from his unknown assailant and is grabbed by multiple officers and slammed into the car. When the crowd of unarmed civilians demonstrates their shock and outrage at this a shotgun is pulled and cocked.

Labor Leaders, in Support of ILWU, Ask Obama to Keep Military Out Of Labor Dispute
Below are two letters which I found on westcoastportshutdown.org. They are dated January 19, 2012, and I have not at this time been able to independently verify them.
If they are legitimate, and if the scenario they discuss is real, than this has the potential to be an extremely serious situation, escalating tensions between labor and the federal government to a level not seen in decades.
The letters and links are reproduced below as I found them.
(On Jan. 22, I found confirming articles with some additional information: Obama Deploys Military in Labor Dispute, Statement of S.F. Labor Council dated January 10; Military Resistance 10A12 dated Jan. 13; Military Intervention vs. Maritime Union Power dated Jan. 21.)

TGDaily.com: Army robot walks like a man on a mission
Beware of Skynet. It starts with a clothing tester, then a treadmill runner. Next thing you know, we have terminators. Make sure you stay near a building with a big hydraulic press and a white-hot vat of molten metal.
Just in case.
This video is not new, but it may be new to you.
Army robot does calisthenics
Posted on Wed, 10/28/2009 – 06:24 by Emma Woollacott
The US Army is ordering bipedal robots that can walk and crawl like a human, in order to test chemical protection clothing.
The Petman robot, under development by Boston Dynamics, is roughly the size and shape of a real human. It can balance itself and walk freely – albeit with a motion reminiscent of someone on the way to the bathroom and not sure if they’ll make it in time. It can also simulate human body temperature and sweating. Continue reading
Cutting Mililtary Personnel To The Bone … And Beyond
“Among the cuts: killing the Marines’ $15 billion expeditionary fighting vehicle; delaying production of the F-35 fighter; and trimming the manpower of the Army and the Marines by 42,000 or more.[Emphasis mine – Mike]” – Wichita Falls (TX) TimesRecordNews, “Our Opinion: Gates says Pentagon faces financial ‘crisis'”, Editorial distributed by Scripps Howard News Service, Posted January 29, 2011 at midnight
Congress — particularly the newly-anti-military, pro-partisan Republicans in the last Senate — refused to let this budget measure for the military even come to a vote in 2010. They filibustered it. Continue reading
