You’re entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts;
An educated electorate is a prerequisite for a democracy.
SIGNOFF QUOTE[s]:
“What we’re discovering is that the Constitution is not a mechanism that runs by itself. Ultimately, we are a government of men and not law. The law has no force without people who are willing to enforce it. The ball is now squarely in the court of the Republican Party, and particularly Senate Republicans. Will they ever be prepared to say enough is enough?” ~ William A. Galston, a senior fellow in governance at the Brookings Institution who graduated from college just before Watergate.
Pledge by Text: Listeners can now text “GIVE” to 713-526-5738 and they’ll receive a text message back with a link to KPFT’s donation page, with which they can make their pledge on-line at their leisure.

SIGNOFF QUOTE[s]:
“You see things; and you say ‘Why?’ But I dream things that never were; and I say ‘Why not?’” ~ George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950), Back to Methuselah, act I, Selected Plays with Prefaces, vol. 2, p. 7 (1949). The serpent says these words to Eve. Senator Robert F. Kennedy used a similar quotation as a theme of his 1968 campaign for the presidential nomination: “Some men see things as they are and say, why; I dream things that never were and say, why not.” ~ Senator Edward M. Kennedy quoted these words of Robert Kennedy’s in his eulogy for his brother in 1968.—The New York Times, June 9, 1968, p. 56.

In and of itself, this is not particularly remarkable. Many US citizens have dual citizenship. Some even go back to their home countries, run for office, and even WIN, while still retaining dual citizenship.
What makes Ted Cruz’s dual citizenship so delicious is that the birth circumstances by which he obtained US citizenship are identical to Barack Obama’s, with only three exceptions:
Ted Cruz’s father was a citizen of Cuba, not Kenya;
Ted Cruz was not born in any US State or Territory; and
If you insist on seeing his valid birth certificate, it’s actually … foreign.

“The Investigator” is a scathing satire of Senator Joseph McCarthy (R-Wisconsin) and his eponymously named ‘witch hunts’ for commies behind every bush and tree.
In the late 1950s, when I was in my late ‘ones’, my friend from across the street played this record for me. I didn’t understand it at the time, but we listened to it several more times over the years, and little by little its significance became apparent to me.
Because this work is so little known and I think the history surrounding it matters even more than the piece itself, I’m posting the article on my site Continue reading →
