George Eads Leaves “CSI”. Will we be seeing him starring in “CSI: San Diego”?

The way “The End Game” ended, and with all the scuttlebutt about “CSI” being canceled because it’s a mature series with all the syndicated reruns they need and has gotten too expensive to make, I’m theorizing the following:

  • Talks about continuing “CSI” are ongoing, last I heard. Cost of production is the primary factor.
  • Finlay has been written out of the picture for as long as desired, whether permanently or temporarily. That’s a 6-figure budget saving.
  • George Eads is out of the picture. Another 6-figure budget saving.

Ted Danson (D.B. Russell) is the highest-paid member of the cast right now. There has been talk of him leaving after this season. Two possible scenarios here:

  • He leaves, saving a big 6-figure payroll;
  • He takes a pay cut and stays put; still a 6-figure budget saving;
  • Danson leaves and Marc Vann (Ecklie) takes over as head CSI; again a big budget saving.

I actually like the possibility of Vann taking the lead as Ecklie, if that’s how things turn out. He has a lot of plusses:

  • He’s a known and established character;
  • He has a known and highly evolved chemistry with the rest of the cast/characters;
  • Marc Vann has shown himself to be a capable actor who can carry significant chunks of a story, and do it as an authority figure;
  • Ecklie has been shown to have a lot of shades to his character, and that opens many story options.

I think that the way they wrote George Eads out of the series also opens up some other doors which I suspect are being explored, such as the possibility of a “CSI: San Diego” spinoff.

While there has been nothing on the internet about such a possibility, “CSI: San Diego” would make a lot of sense the way things have been left.

  • Cast costs would be relatively moderate for at least the first several seasons;
  • George Eads, the actor, has a following who will at least give the show a chance;
  • Nick Stokes, the character, is well established and needs no introduction or tedious back-story narrative to bog down the series’ first few episodes.

If this spinoff is actually being considered (and if it’s not, it should be), casting would be key. A good ensemble cast is not easy to assemble. Getting the right chemistry among the characters AND the actors is an almost mystical process, and would make or break the show.

Having heard nothing so far about a “CSI: San Diego” starring George Eads, it’s probably a longshot to see it in the fall line-up, but a January premier might be possible. Let’s see how things play out…

What Would Happen To The Earth If The Moon Was Destroyed?

It’s a common theme in science fiction: The Moon is destroyed or suddenly pulled from the Earth’s orbit. What would happen to the Earth?

It occurs to me that while discussion of the Moon being destroyed usually focuses on things like tides and debris raining down on earth, a more serious possibility would be throwing the earth out of its current orbit.

The Moon doesn’t actually orbit the Earth. Actually, the Earth and the Moon orbit around a common point known as the epicenter.

Given that the Moon is so large that the Moon and Earth represent a virtual double planet, the sudden destruction of the moon could very well send the Earth into an orbit further from, or closer to, the Sun, depending on where the Earth was in relation to its orbit around that epicenter. Since it would move tangentially away from that point, the end result is unknowable … but it would be bad.

Very bad.

Imagine a cue ball suddenly caroming around a pool table… But not to worry. We’d all be dead by the time it hit anything even without the impact of any debris from a shattered Moon, since it would probably be like a case of cosmic whiplash as the Earth suddenly took off in a whole new direction while none of us were belted in.

The result would be a VERY short science fiction story, but a great disaster movie.

New York City: A place of many diverse and debatable histories (3 Stories)

New Online Archive Shows Colonial New York Was Rowdy, Filthy, Smelly (National Geographic, by Andrea Stone for National Geographic Published December 20, 2014):

“WHEREAS we have experienced the insolence of some of our inhabitants, when drunk, their quarrelling, hitting and fighting each other even on the Lords day of rest, of which we ourselves have witnessed the painful example last Sunday in contravention of law, to the contempt and disgrace of our person and office, to the annoyance of our neighbors, and to the disregard, nay contempt of Gods holy laws and ordinances …”

So begins the first edict issued by the newly appointed director-general of New Netherland, Peter Stuyvesant. The decree went on to prohibit the sale of alcohol on Sunday before “preaching” was over. [Read the full article here]

America’s first urban myth?, Posted by Dennis Zotigh at 03:37:44 PM in American History, Beyond FAQ: Let’s talk :

One famous story in American history involves the sale of Manhattan. In this legend, Manhattan Island was sold by Indians in exchange for trinkets and beads. If it were true, it would arguably be one of the greatest real estate deals in history. To date, no deed of land transfer, formal title or bill of sale has ever surfaced to serve as proof of this purchase by the Dutch from the Indians.  So is this transaction legal?

Housed in the Rijksarchief (the Dutch National Archives) in The Hague, Netherlands, is a letter that references the sale of the Manhattes (Manhattan) written by the Dutch merchant Pieter Schagen, dated November 5, 1626. (A copy of the letter and translation in both Dutch and English can be accessed here.) In this letter Schagen wrote, “They have purchased the Island of Manhattes from the savages for the value of 60 guilders.” Schagen’s letter does not verify either the date of sale or who sold Manhattan on behalf of which tribe of Indians. Further, historians and scholars cannot agree on which tribe actually received payment in exchange for Manhattan. Included in historical references associated with the sale of Manhattan are the Lenape, Manahatin, Canarsie, Shinnecock, and Munsee Indians. [Click here to read entire story]

Peach Tree War, From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

The Peach Tree War, also known as the Peach War, was a large scale attack by the Susquehannock Nation and allied Native Americans on several New Netherland settlements along the Hudson River (then called the North River), centered on New Amsterdam and Pavonia on September 15, 1655.

The attack was motivated by the Dutch conquest of New Sweden, a close trading partner and protectorate of the Susquehannock, The attack was a decisive victory for the Native Americans, and many outlying Dutch settlements were forced to temporarily garrison in Fort Amsterdam. Some of these settlements, such as the Staten Island colony, were completely abandoned; while others were soon repopulated (and equipped with better defenses), as Director-General Stuyvesant shortly repurchased the rights to settle the west bank of the North River from the Native Americans. Elizabeth Warren to Citigroup: “…Dodd-Frank isn’t perfect. It should have broken you into pieces!” [VIDEO, @ 6m10s]

Partial transcript* starting at 5m25s:

Democrats don’t like Wall Street bailouts. Republicans don’t like Wall Street bailouts. The American people are disgusted by Wall Street bailouts

And yet here we are, five years after Dodd-Frank with Congress on the verge of ramming through a provision that would do nothing for the middle class, do nothing for community banks, do nothing but raise the risk that taxpayers will have to bail out the biggest banks once again…

So let me say this to anyone who is listening at Citi[group]. I agree with you Dodd-Frank isn’t perfect. It should have broken you into pieces!

If this Congress is going to open up Dodd-Frank in the months ahead, then let’s open it up to get tougher, not to create more bailout opportunities. If we’re going to open up Dodd-Frank, let’s open it up so that once and for all we end too big to fail and I mean really end it, not just say that we did.

Instead of passing laws that create new bailout opportunities for too big to fail banks, let’s pass… something… that would help break up these giant banks.

A century ago Teddy Roosevelt was America’s Trust-Buster. He went after the giant trusts and monopolies in this country, and a lot of people talk about how those trusts deserved to be broken up because they had too much economic power. But Teddy Roosevelt said we should break them up because they had too much political power. Teddy Roosevelt said break them up because all that concentrated power threatens the very foundations of our democratic system.

And now we’re watching as Congress passes yet another provision that was written by lobbyists for the biggest recipient of bailout money in the history of this country. And its attached to a bill that needs to pass or else the entire federal government will grind to a halt.

Think about that kind of power. If a financial institution has become so big and so powerful that it can hold the entire country hostage. That alone is reason enough to break them up.

Enough is enough.

Enough is enough with Wall Street insiders getting key position after key position and the kind of cronyism that we have seen in the executive branch. Enough is enough with Citigroup passing 11th hour deregulatory provisions that nobody takes ownership over but everybody will come to regret. Enough is enough

Washington already works really well for the billionaires and the big corporations and the lawyers and the lobbyists.

But what about the families who lost their homes or their jobs or their retirement savings the last time Citigroup bet big on derivatives and lost? What about the families who are living paycheck to paycheck and saw their tax dollars go to bail out Citi just 6 years ago?

We were sent here to fight for those families. It is time, it is past time, for Washington to start working for them!

Police Recruiting: Who are they attracting?

This is a live link to Houston Police Department Recruiting: hpdcareer.com

On last week’s show, there was a lot of discussion on police and a police department’s relationship with the community it serves. There was also some discussion of the kinds of recruits police departments are attracting. Callers concluded that the primary pool of police recruits may come from ex-military personnel. At first blush, this would seem a perfect skillset fit; ex-military people are typically tough, disciplined, know how to take and give orders, and are trained in enforcing compliance.

This might lead one to conclude that military training and experience is the perfect precursor to a police career.

But is it? Continue reading

MSNBC & News19-WLTX[CBS]: SC trooper fired for shooting black motorist charged with assault [VIDEO]

When we have discussions of innocent black men being endangered just by the color of their skin, I think that this is one of the most convincing pieces of evidence I have ever seen.

I’m posting this because I don’t think it’s seen often enough in the media, yet I think it’s perhaps the most effective statement I’ve ever seen of the danger a black men faces every day, simply going about his normal life.

This young man, Levar Jones, wasn’t selling untaxed cigarettes. He wasn’t walking in the middle of the street or allegedly assaulting a police officer in his patrol car. He wasn’t belligerent of uncooperative to the officer.

Rather, he pulled into a gas station to buy fuel, and was then approached by a South Carolina police vehicle for a minor traffic violation (not wearing a seatbelt). Jones was then shot by South Carolina State Trooper Sean Groubert as he was following Trooper Groubert’s instructions to show ID.

I’ve chosen this clip specifically because it has no additional commentary. You can watch and listen and judge for yourself. Below the video, I have posted a link to an MSNBC article which also features the video as part of a longer written piece.

Pay attention to how courteous Jones is throughout the entire episode, even continuing to call Groubert “sir” after he was shot, and apologizing to the Trooper for reaching into his car too quickly.

Trooper Groubert fired 3 shots that I can discern from this video. It is reported that Jones was shot in the hip, but is expected to make a “full recovery”. At last word, he has been released from the hospital.

NatGeo Article: Hidden Streams Under Cities Are Exposed to Light of Day [VIDEO]

by Brian Clark Howard, National Geographic (Published November 25, 2014)

WASHINGTON—A small stream gurgles under a historic stone bridge, once used by Revolutionary War patriots to transport supplies. For more than a century, the bridge was bricked up, the stream beneath it just a dry, eroded channel.

As in many places, this tributary of the Broad Branch stream had been forced underground around the turn of the century, through a program designed to rid Washington, D.C., of surface water. At the time, malaria was a major killer, and cities around the world were draining any kind of standing water or “swamp,” out of both a fear of mosquito-borne disease and a desire to create more land for development.

“There is a big difference between racism & prejudice…”

“There is a big difference between racism & prejudice…” ~ Annette Gray (11/25/2014)

Annette, this is an important statement. While I don’t think it’s possible to be racist without being prejudiced, it is entirely possible to be prejudiced without consciously being, or meaning to be, racist.

For many people, prejudice is something subconsciously visceral; it’s possible to feel a prejudice for a moment before your higher faculties come into play and over-rule it.

Prejudice is not just about race. It can be related to politics, nationalism, music, or almost anything else. This is not to say that prejudice can be less injurious than racism, but I think that true racism is more about conscious intent, making ‘true’ racism closer to evil.

As I see it, part of the function of racial integration in our communities, schools and places of business is to acclimate all of us — but especially our youngsters — to world with many different kinds of people who look, sound, believe, dress and perhaps even smell different, and not seeing or feeling anything remarkable about that. This is a multi-generational endeavor, and the only path to success will require multi-generational effort.
