TOPIC: The Impact of Deepwater Horizon/BP’s Oil Spill 3 years on (June 24, 2013)

For the past two months, it’s been the 3rd anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon/BP Oil Spill. It started on April 20, 2010, and flowed for 87 days until it was capped on 15 July 2010. So we’ll be ‘celebrating’ the anniversary of this massive spill for about another month.

Texas was fortunate in not being impacted by this disaster as directly as the other Gulf States, but the Gulf of Mexico is an environmental and ecological system, so no part of it is totally unaffected by events taking place elsewhere. Also, the Texas part of the Gulf Coast has been experiencing its own problems and environmental degradation over the past decades.

So 3 years later, what’s the story? What’s being done, who’s paying for it, and what are the long-term plans?

My guest today is Bob Stokes, President of the Galveston Bay Foundation. The Galveston Bay Foundation’s mission is to preserve, protect, and enhance the natural resources of Galveston Bay and its tributaries.  It has programs in advocacy, conservation, education, and research.  Bob served on the board of the Foundation for five years, including a 2-year stint as Board Chair, prior to taking over as Foundation President.

Bob is a graduate of Yale University and the UT School of Law.  In both private practice and as a lawyer working for the Harris County Attorney’s Office, Bob has been involved in environmental law related to civil and administrative matters. In his County Attorney practice, he has gone before the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality both opposing and pursuing state environmental permits.

In 2011, Bob Stokes was awarded the “Environmental Professional of the Year” award by the Texas Association of Environmental Professionals.

“NYPD arrests 2 for filming cops. Seizes cameras, SD card to destroy evidence. They took the wrong SD card” [VIDEO]

I post this without comment. Judge for yourself. ~ Mike

From liveleak.com:

NYPD arrests woman filming police’s “vehicle safety checkpoint”; they seize the wrong SD card

NYPD must be required to wear badge cameras!

Cameraman :
”We were arrested while filming an NYPD checkpoint on a bridge between a soon to be gentrified Bronx and a quickly gentrifying Harlem. We were charged with OGA, DisCon, and resisting arrest. I was holding a bag of yarn in one hand and a canvas in the other. My partner had food in his hands when he was tackled. Even though their violent actions were unjust, we did not resist. Simultaneous with our “arrests”, the checkpoint was closed down”

What is the role of a U.S. Marshal?

Donald V. Crowley created the painting “Justice” as a tribute to the U.S. Marshals Service’s 200 anniversary in 1989.

We see and hear about them all the time in movies and TV shows about the Old West, but what are they in modern terms?

The Evolution of Asian Eyebrows: A (Dia)critical Contemplation, by Jana J. Monji

by Jana J. Monji
January 3, 2013

After watching “Cloud Atlas” and reading the many comments posted on Roger Ebert’s Facebook page, I found myself reflecting on circumflexion and the evolution of the yellowface East Asian eyebrows in cinema, particularly in regards to men. As a former copy editor, I developed this into a diacritical reflection on circumflexion.

I don’t know about you, but I’m have so little body hair that I don’t need to shave my legs, I never worry about waxing my moustache and my eyebrows are so thin I pencil them in. If I didn’t my eyebrows would be little more than en dashes over my eyes. Diacritically speaking, my eyebrows and eyes could be represented as a inverted semi-colon.

I know many East Asian guys who can’t grow more than a dirty-lip look facial hair and should wax and tweeze instead of shave. Their eyebrows might be more like an em dash. This isn’t how East Asian male eyebrows are drawn in for yellowface.
