ARTICLE: Designers Building Roadways That Generate Solar Power, By Zoë Schlanger / November 17, 2014 1:47 PM EST

I always wonder about photovoltaic (PV) cells. How much generating capacity degradation occurs over time due to dirt and grime accumulating on the cells’ surfaces? How important is it to keep them clean, and how clean? If you install them on a sloped roof, cleaning is hard and dangerous (and potentially expensive) enough; even worse to 2, 3 or 4-story roofs.

When you talk about parking lots and roadways, the problem becomes orders of magnitude greater: Tire detritus, oil and grease drippings from vehicles, dust and dirt washed out of the skies and the adjoining soils.

I’ve never understood how or if these things are calculated into life-cost, investment payback and/or energy efficiency.

Having E-Mail Synch Issues with Outlook 2010? Try This Download and Solution

I’ve been having a frustrating problem with my IMAP/MAPI email connector from Outlook 2010 to MSN/Hotmail/Outlook.com since about Oct. 26-28, 2014. I can receive mail from MAPI, but cannot send. For sending I have to use POP3. This is a really awkward work-around.

From my searches, this appears to be a very common issue, and there is no definitive solution I can find. If you know of an effective fix for this problem, please let me know ASAP. I’ll do the same here if I learn of a ‘fix’ that does the job.

As of 11/13/2014, the most recent version I can find of the Microsoft Outlook Hotmail Connector is Ver. 14.0.6123.5001. (The tricky part is that when you go to Properties/Details, it says Ver. 14.0.6119.5001, but when you install it, Control Panel/Programs and Features claims it’s Ver. 14.0.6123.5001. (Outlook 2013 does not require this connector, so it’s entirely possible that this 2012 update is the last they made.)

I suggest that you DO NOT try to ‘repair’ your existing connector.

The suggested fix is to close Outlook; remove the version of Outlook Connector you’re using now (using Control Panel/Programs and Features), and install this newest version (link below). Open Control Panel/Programs and check the version. Then open Outlook and see if it fixes your problem.

I just tried this, and it stops giving me error messages, but still doesn’t send email from MAPI. But it may help you, so I post it here.

I’ve included an ‘open’ link, so you know it’s officially Microsoft.

Use an Outlook.com account in Outlook

To use an Outlook.com account (formerly Hotmail) together with Microsoft Outlook 2010 [or 2003 or 2007], you must first install the Microsoft Outlook Hotmail Connector.

  • Rosetta Mission Probe May Have Rebounded Off Comet, By Stav Ziv 11/12/14 at 5:25 PM (NEWSweek.com)
  • Obamacare enrollment for 2015 starts Saturday.
  • Remember Ebola? We’ve gone from “All Ebola, all the time” in the news to, “Ebola? That still out there?”
    • We need what CNN used to be, and we need CNN HLN to be what IT used to be.
    • Stories disappear because there’s only so much you can put in a half hour or hour of news.
  • Why can banks write off fines on the income tax? Can you?
  •  RightwingNews:
    • The wrong ‘Loretta Lynch’
    • Net Neutrality costs jobs??
  • Net Neutrality: What took Obama so long? Does his party have to get smashed in elections before he acts decisively?
  • Impeachment: If the GOP wants to impeach Obama, let’s talk about the DoJ sending Bush/Cheney to the Hague. I’m sure they would be welcomed with open arms.
  • Voter Fraud vs. Election Fraud: What’s the difference?
    • Don’t stop property taxes or Homeowners Insurance costs: This is not always made clear
    • Leaves heirs with debt issues: Taxes and reverse mortgage debt (FROM WEB SITE: Taking out a reverse mortgage can jeopardize your ability to leave your home to your heirs. If this is a priority for you, think twice about a reverse mortgage.)
    • FROM WEB SITE: Are you on a fixed income with no other assets? If you don’t have much income, a reverse mortgage might not be the best option for you. If you take out a reverse mortgage loan and then have trouble paying your property taxes and homeowner’s insurance, you could face foreclosure.Reverse Mortgages: Good or bad
  • “Underbanking”: What is it and why does it matter?
  • Organ Transplants: Why the dearth of donors?
    • Stop using the word “Harvest”
    • Some participants indicated that they wouldn’t donate the organs of their next of kin if his or her heart were still beating, even if they were proclaimed brain-dead.
    • due to a belief in the afterlife and the concern for maintaining body integrity.
    • Others can’t shake the “ick” factor. Defined by researchers as “a basic disgust response to the idea of organ procurement or transplantation,” a 2011 study in Scotland found that non-donors reported higher levels of the ick factor and concern with body integrity than donors.
    • Distrust of doctors; maybe too anxious to ‘harvest’. (The only word not explored in the article.)
    • WAYS OF PROMOTING ORGAN TRANSPLANT DONATION
      • “Opt out” instead of “Opt In”.
      • Top-of-List for donors and their families.

Thumbnail Reviews: “Gotham” and “The Flash”

Superheroes are always ‘made for TV’, and there are almost always some around on the nets.

As a science fiction and fantasy fan, I’m always ‘up’ for some good make-believe and I sample, but I’m hard to hang on to as a viewer.

I like “The Flash” (aka, Barry Allen) okay, and it’s showing some promising twists. It’s lo-calorie fun, but it’s not must-see TV for me. Tom Cavanagh plays an interesting, creepy Dr. Wells who is not what he seems. The pilot shows Barry Allen’s mom dying in some sort of weird indoor cyclone. For those familiar with old “Flash Comics” canon, it looked like [SPOILER ALERT POSTED IN WHITE TEXT] she was somehow killed by ‘Reverse Flash’, a character who is costumed in yellow with red trim. (The reverse of Flash’s red with yellow trim.

I can only watch so much DVR in one day, though, and we’ll see if “The Flash“continues to make the cut for me.

“Gotham”, though, is … Amazing! A prequel in the Batman legend focused on then-detective James Gordon, it’s dark, intense, smart, well-acted and well-written. All the starring roles are well-cast (some better than others), and even the small parts are competently acted.

Sean Pertwee is the darkest “Alfred the Butler” you’ve ever seen. He’s definitely one of the ‘good guys’, but they’re hinting at a past. I’m starting to bet on UK Special Forces

A standout is Robin Lord Taylor, and this may turn out to be his role of a lifetime; a tough thing when you’re still a young actor. (His age is not disclosed in his bios, but I would guess middle-ish 20s…Unless that’s what he WANTS us to think!)  Taylor has created a Penguin character that is uniquely engaging; an obvious psychopath that you still find yourself wanting to like. (That is, after all, what successful psychopaths do.) This is the first time that I have ever found the Penguin to be something other than a ridiculous character. Others have said that Taylor’s Penguin is the dark, bloody heart of “Gotham”, and I agree.

If Taylor doesn’t get at least an Emmy nomination, then TANJ! (Or as Larry Niven often notes in his books, There Ain’t No Justice)

I don’t think  that “Gotham” will be triaged from my DVR any time soon.

Reporting an IRS Impersonation Scam

Below, in the body of this post, links are provided to sites at the IRS and US Treasury Department to research or report fraudulent calls or emails.

The text and links are copied directly from web pages to which the links will take you. Quoting from a portion of what’s below:

  • “If you know you owe taxes or think you might owe, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS workers can help you with a payment issue.
  • “If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to believe that you do, report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) at 1.800.366.4484 or at www.tigta.gov.
  • “You can file a complaint using the FTC Complaint Assistant; choose “Other” and then “Imposter Scams.” If the complaint involves someone impersonating the IRS, include the words “IRS Telephone Scam” in the notes.

“Remember, too, the IRS does not use unsolicited email, text messages or any social media to discuss your personal tax issue. For more information on reporting tax scams, go to http://www.irs.gov and type “scam” in the search box.”

____________________________________________

We have recently been receiving threatening phone calls (on a cell phone number, in this case) from what is purported to be the IRS. The voice is digital. It claims that the phone call is a final warning before the IRS sues you. It them gives you a phone number with a Washington, DC area code to return the call.

If you call back, they ask you for your Social Security Number, among other things.

NEVER GIVE OUT YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER, DRIVERS LICENSE NUMBER OR CREDIT CARD NUMBERS UNLESS YOU ARE CERTAIN TO WHOM YOU ARE SPEAKING!

If you are told to call a number for the IRS, your bank, or any other institution or company which then asks YOU for information THEY should have, call back at a number you know is correct, such as on the back of your credit/debit card, or at the IRS.gov website.

Movie Review: “Defending Your Life (1991)”: A Different ‘Take’ On The Afterlife

Defending Your Life (1991)

This is a surprising little movie. You start to love it before you realize you much like it.Most movies depicting Heaven or Hell are about judging whether you lived a good life or a bad one. “Defending Your Life” is different, in that you are judged as to whether you lived a courageous life of your beliefs and convictions, or a cowardly life where you knew the right thing to do but failed to act out of fear. It’s never laugh-out-loud funny, but always light and amusing. The thing that makes this movie special is the insidious way it makes you start to judge your own life: Did you ask the boss for that well-deserved raise? Did you stand up to the school bully? Did you ever ask out that girl you had a crush on?

Danny dies in a stupid accident. (Are there any smart ones?) He wakes up in Judgement City and finds love there, but will he win her? Does he deserve her? Will they be separated for eternity because of Danny’s lack of personal courage?

Well-supported by a memorable, catchy, businesslike (in a good way) and very un-Heavenly musical score by Michael Gore, this is a movie to watch with someone for the discussion you’ll likely want to have after viewing it.

#ThinkwingRadio: SEPTEMBER 17, 2014, 10PM, @KPFT-FM 90.1 (Houston). GUESTS: YOU! (Open Forum); TOPIC(s): Elections Upcoming, “The Fifth Season”, What ‘THEY’ Understand, Monoculture, #100YSS

SHOW AUDIO: kpft_2014-09-17_2200 CULTURE & DISCIPLINE, ELECTION INFO, DONALD HONIG’S PHOTO, THEY UNDERSTAND, BANANAS

[NOTE: This show was a total surprise to me and shows how live talk can sometimes become soothing other than what the host expected. I was expecting talk of elections, right-wing politics and liberal protests, my search for a baseball photo, maybe the 100 Year Star Ship Symposium, and the environmental risks of Agribusiness’s love affair with monoculture and the end of bananas as we know them. Instead, it turned into a discussion of Adrian Peterson, Ray Rice, discipline vs. abuse/assault, and the connections of those things to race, culture, and history. It was a fascinating discussion which provoked a lot of thought and some future research. – Mike]
