TOPIC: The Impact of Deepwater Horizon/BP’s Oil Spill 3 years on (June 24, 2013)

For the past two months, it’s been the 3rd anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon/BP Oil Spill. It started on April 20, 2010, and flowed for 87 days until it was capped on 15 July 2010. So we’ll be ‘celebrating’ the anniversary of this massive spill for about another month.

Texas was fortunate in not being impacted by this disaster as directly as the other Gulf States, but the Gulf of Mexico is an environmental and ecological system, so no part of it is totally unaffected by events taking place elsewhere. Also, the Texas part of the Gulf Coast has been experiencing its own problems and environmental degradation over the past decades.

So 3 years later, what’s the story? What’s being done, who’s paying for it, and what are the long-term plans?

My guest today is Bob Stokes, President of the Galveston Bay Foundation. The Galveston Bay Foundation’s mission is to preserve, protect, and enhance the natural resources of Galveston Bay and its tributaries.  It has programs in advocacy, conservation, education, and research.  Bob served on the board of the Foundation for five years, including a 2-year stint as Board Chair, prior to taking over as Foundation President.

Bob is a graduate of Yale University and the UT School of Law.  In both private practice and as a lawyer working for the Harris County Attorney’s Office, Bob has been involved in environmental law related to civil and administrative matters. In his County Attorney practice, he has gone before the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality both opposing and pursuing state environmental permits.

In 2011, Bob Stokes was awarded the “Environmental Professional of the Year” award by the Texas Association of Environmental Professionals.

Thinkwing Radio with Mike Honig, May 8, 2013, TOPIC: Gun control or gun freedom? Today we’re going to talk about the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution, but not about gun control or regulation, per se. GUEST: Dr. Melissa Hamilton

TOPIC: Gun control or gun freedom? Today we’re going to talk about the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution, but not about gun control or regulation, per se.

Instead, my guest and I will be discussing the 2nd Amendment itself. What was its intent? How has it been interpreted by society over the decades and centuries since the nation’s founding? How has judicial interpretation of the 2nd Amendment evolved over time? And how do all those things inform and affect the gun debates in this country today?

My guest today is Dr. Melissa Hamilton. She is a visiting law professor at the University of Houston Law Center. She has a law degree from the University of Texas at Austin School of Law and a Ph.D in Criminology & Criminal Justice. She is a former police officer and former corrections officer. Dr. Hamilton teaches in the areas of criminal law and criminal procedure. Her research interests focus on interpersonal violence.

SHOW ANNOUNCEMENT: “Thinkwing Radio with Mike Honig” Returning To Broadcast

KPFT, the Pacifica station in Houston, Texas, is ‘relaunching’ their HD3 broadcast channel. Programming on KPFT HD3 will also be simulcast online. At this time, you can hear KPFT HD3 at several URLs including: http://tunein.com/radio/KPFT-HD3-901-s134745/ , http://kpfttx.rad.io/

“Thinkwing Radio with Mike Honig” is scheduled to premier on May 1, 2013 and will be on every Wednesday from 2-3PM (CT).

The current concept I have for the show is outlined in an early draft below:

DESCRIPTION:

Why “’Thinkwing’ Radio”? Because I try to be open to reasoned (even opposite) opinions, even if I disagree with them. I certainly have a Progressive outlook, but I try to conduct the show based on two premises:

  1. An educated electorate is a prerequisite for a democracy; and
  2. You’re entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts.

An additional caveat: Just because I agree with you, don’t assume that you won’t have to defend your position.

While on some level, any topic can be 6 degrees (or less) of separation from politics, that’s not the only focus of the show. Guests range from authors to historians, economists, political candidates and party leaders. Topics can be on politics, technology, science, space exploration, environment, or anything else which catches my fancy as I’m building toward a show each week. I’m a man of many interests, and my show topics will reflect that.

Tune in Wednesdays at 2PM on KPFT HD3 and on the web, or listen after the show “On Demand”. All shows will have a blog post component online, and we can respond to any comments no later than the next show. (We’ll see about a ‘real-time’ option.) We hope to allow listener participation through Twitter, and perhaps email and/or Facebook. (This will be a work-in-progress for a while.)

Join us. We’ll always be something new.

Further information will be provided when it becomes available.
