About Thinkwing Radio

Mike Honig is originally from Brooklyn, New York. He moved to Houston in September of 1977 and has been there ever since. Mike's interests are politics, history, science, science fiction (and reading generally), technology, and almost anything else. Mike has knowledge and experience in many diverse fields, sometimes from having worked in them, and sometimes from extensive reading or discussion about them. Mike's general knowledge makes him a favorite partner in Trivial Pursuit. He likes to say that about most things, he knows enough to be dangerous. Humility is a work-in-progress.

Below are two organizations whose endorsements I value in cases where I don’t know much (if anything) about the candidates:

Michael Jackson’s This Is It – They Don’t Care About Us – Dancing Inmates [VIDEO]

Under the circumstances, I think this song was a pretty gutsy choice for the prison authorities to use. ~ Mike

Uploaded on Jan 22, 2010: (Philippines) “Dancing Inmates” from Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC), a maximum security prison, were treated to a visit by Michael Jackson’s long-time choreographer Travis Payne and dancers Daniel Celebre and Dres Reid to learn performances from “THIS IS IT“.

Overheard on the Flight Deck of the USS George H.W. Bush [VIDEO]

I hate to totally lift a piece from somewhere else, but whether the conversation below actually happened or not, it’s a joke with a punch line and has to be read with continuity.

The setting is a test flight of a fighter-sized unmanned aircraft — dubbed the X-47B — doing touch-and-go landings on the aircraft carrier USS George H. W. Bush. The POV seems to be two F-18 pilots flying CAP or observation over the carrier. The conversation is below the photo. The video of the test is below that.

Some more info on the X-47B is here. The original article is here.

PUFF OF HISTORY: With the smoke puffs created when its wheels touch the flight deck, the unmanned X-47B conducted its first “touch-and-go landing op” last Friday.

“This is what a rocket launch and landing is supposed to look like.” [VIDEO]

To quote Alan Boyle, “This is what a rocket launch and landing is supposed to look like.”

100YSS Symposium Logo

This weekend (Sept 19-22, 2013) Houston will be hosting this year’s 100 Year Star Ship (100YSS) Symposium. Anyone who is interested may attend. To discuss it, my tentatively scheduled guests are former NASA astronaut and founder of the 100YSS, Dr. Mae Jemison, along with Dr. Karl Aspelund. Dr. Aspelund is a textile professor who won a grant to research recyclable sustainable clothing such as might be needed on a 30-year space mission where water and clothing are limited (Yes, the Final Frontier includes laundry); And Mae Jemison, first woman of color in space, doctor, astronaut, and leader of 100 Year Starship.

The 100 Year Star Ship is not science fiction. It’s an initiative of DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency; the folks who helped create the internet). It’s a serious concept supported by ongoing research and funding in various sciences, technologies and disciplines. The goal is to develop the knowledge and capabilities necessary to launch an interstellar-capable vessel within 100 years. You can see some of the research tracks being explored, here: http://symposium.100yss.org/technical-tracks Continue reading

I originally found this at http://kottke.org/13/05/tender-moments-caught-on-russian-dash-cams, where there is a brief descriptive article attached.

Buzz Aldrin: This is why he was a fighter pilot [VIDEO]

There are obviously limits to how much you can ‘bug’ Buzz. (Most folks seem to feel that this guy deserved what he got.)
