My guest tonight is Kit O’Connell (@KitOConnell), a gonzo journalist from Austin, Texas where he works as an editor and correspondent for Firedoglake. After joining Occupy Austin in November 2011, he participated in Occupy actions in Chicago, Houston, San Antonio and New York City including the Houston Port Shutdown and the September 2012 anniversary of Occupy Wall Street. Since the movement’s peak, Kit was part of the struggle for women’s rights against the Texas Legislature and organized grassroots support for the victims of the Austin Halloween Flood.

Moji Agha is an Iranian-American Sufi Monk, a cultural psychologist, bi-lingual poet, and peace and human rights and environmental activist. He is the founder of the Mossadegh Legacy Institute, and its project to create American circles of non-violence. Muhammad Sahimi, a professor at USC, has been analyzing Iran’s political developments and its nuclear program for nearly two decades. He is currently editor and publisher of the website, Iran News & Middle East Reports, www.imenews.com

There may be fewer than 100,000 Quakers in North America. The Quakers are known by most people through movies or some documentaries. This makes Quakers great as plot points. That being the case, Quakers (Religious Society of Friends) are almost a part of American mythos. Most folks have never actually met a Quaker or had a chance to discuss their faith with them. I hope to change that during this program.

Houston is basically flat. It is recorded as having an elevation of about 43 feet above sea level in the vicinity of downtown. The Houston Heights are about 25 feet higher than that. This makes for slow runoff when there are sudden inflows of water, whether from local rain, or water coming from higher up in the regional watershed. Especially since the 1930s, the channeling of water – what is often called flood control – has been a significant part of life in metro-Houston. Houston has subsided, expanded and developed, more water-permeable land has been paved over, and paved roads have effectively turned into either channels or basins for water looking for a place to go.

This has created an endless need for flood control infrastructure and for human meddling with the local bayous; nature’s original means of draining this region of Texas.

My guest is Evelyn Merz of the Houston Regional Group of the Sierra Club. She is a past chair of the group and is currently the Conservation Chair. At the state-wide level of the Sierra Club, she works on state park issues and non-game wildlife. Locally, Evelyn has worked on bayou issues for about 20 years and is currently coordinating the Houston Sierra Club response to Harris County Flood Control District’s Memorial Park Demonstration Plan for Buffalo Bayou.

100YSS Symposium Logo

This weekend (Sept 19-22, 2013) Houston will be hosting this year’s 100 Year Star Ship (100YSS) Symposium. Anyone who is interested may attend. To discuss it, my tentatively scheduled guests are former NASA astronaut and founder of the 100YSS, Dr. Mae Jemison, along with Dr. Karl Aspelund. Dr. Aspelund is a textile professor who won a grant to research recyclable sustainable clothing such as might be needed on a 30-year space mission where water and clothing are limited (Yes, the Final Frontier includes laundry); And Mae Jemison, first woman of color in space, doctor, astronaut, and leader of 100 Year Starship.

The 100 Year Star Ship is not science fiction. It’s an initiative of DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency; the folks who helped create the internet). It’s a serious concept supported by ongoing research and funding in various sciences, technologies and disciplines. The goal is to develop the knowledge and capabilities necessary to launch an interstellar-capable vessel within 100 years. Show Announcement: “Unionizing For Dummies”, 8/8/2012

On Wednesday, August 8 from 9:05-9:25am (CDT), I’ll be doing a show which I think may be a little groundbreaking.

My guest will be Baber Mohammed, a labor organizer for the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), Local 1 in Houston.

Progressives, Democrats and various pro-labor groups and individuals can often be heard waxing eloquently about all the benefits which organized labor has brought to the American workforce, both union and non-union. One topic rarely discussed in media is, how do you start to unionize? Where does a person or small group of workers begin?

This will be the topic for a show which I’m entitling “Unionizing For Dummies™ (Part 1)”. Baber and I will be discussing some of the most basic “‘how-to’s” of unionizing, starting with the question, “Where do I begin??”

It is my hope that this will be the first in a series of “Unionizing For Dummies™” episodes.

Can we trust our U.S. election system?

On Friday, August 3rd from 9:05-9:55am (CDT), I will be interviewing famed honest-election journalist and advocate Brad Friedman. This will be a “Thinkwing Radio” edition, and will combine “Open Journal-Community Conversation” with “Open Journal-Community Spotlight”. (“Community Conversation” will be live from 9:05-9:30am. Brad’s interview will run from 9:30-9:55am, and will be pre-recorded.) You will be able to listen in real time in Houston on 90.1 FM, or online here.

Voter rights and election integrity have been under assault in ways that we have not seen since the 1965 Voting Rights Act became law. Why that’s the case, what can be done about it, and how you can take steps to protect your vote will be among the topics of discussion during this hour.

My guest will be April Tone of the Harris County Dispute Resolution Center (DRC).

The DRC is a free service available to all Harris County residents. It handles disputes between neighbors, families and friends, among other things.
