#ThinkwingRadio: SEPTEMBER 17, 2014, 10PM, @KPFT-FM 90.1 (Houston). GUESTS: YOU! (Open Forum); TOPIC(s): Elections Upcoming, “The Fifth Season”, What ‘THEY’ Understand, Monoculture, #100YSS

SHOW AUDIO: kpft_2014-09-17_2200 CULTURE & DISCIPLINE, ELECTION INFO, DONALD HONIG’S PHOTO, THEY UNDERSTAND, BANANAS

[NOTE: This show was a total surprise to me and shows how live talk can sometimes become soothing other than what the host expected. I was expecting talk of elections, right-wing politics and liberal protests, my search for a baseball photo, maybe the 100 Year Star Ship Symposium, and the environmental risks of Agribusiness’s love affair with monoculture and the end of bananas as we know them. Instead, it turned into a discussion of Adrian Peterson, Ray Rice, discipline vs. abuse/assault, and the connections of those things to race, culture, and history. It was a fascinating discussion which provoked a lot of thought and some future research. – Mike]

NOTE AFTER THE SHOW: Thanks so much to Egberto and Eric and the callers who were willing to participate and take advantage of the show’s “Safe Zone”, and share honesty and candor, and allow us to have a true dialogue. This show meant a lot to me. ~ Mike

SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT TONIGHT’S SHOW: Race is a difficult, and even risky, topic for public discussion. Sometimes, one moment of naïve candor or an unfortunate turn of phrase can raise a firestorm of protest and criticism.

I am hoping that tonight’s show can be a “Judgment-Free Zone” in order to encourage a real and useful discussion of the challenges we ALL face when it comes to race relations.

David Fowler, Radio Talk Show Host: Gone But Not Forgotten (and his Chili Recipe)

David Fowler was a talk show host and radio personality on KPRC 950-AM when I came to Houston in 1977. He was possibly my favorite radio talk show host ever. He was smart, funny, plain-spoken, and had a great laugh.

The story I’ve heard is that KPRC radio fired him mainly to cut salary costs (he was highly paid).

I still think of him every time I get into my car and turn on the radio, and I miss him.

I hope that I do a radio show that’s at least half as fun to listen to as his was.

Fowler, who had been married five times, was retired at the time of his death in 2004. He passed away of natural causes in Cadiz, Kentucky at the age of 67.

RIP, David.

This non-Chili Chili Recipe is famous among a certain generation of radio listeners. The only changes I’ve made to the original transcription is numbering and paragraphing to make it easier to follow. For that, I apologize. – Mike H
